The St Helier - Funchal Geminação is a very active committee which like the other twinning groups has an island-wide membership. Each year it has organised a variety of cultural events, especially the celebrations marking Portugal Day (10th June) and Madeira Day (1st July). Concerts of Portuguese music (fado) have been arranged, and Portuguese language classes run in the Town Hall for islanders wishing to tackle learning the very difficult language. Exchange visits have flourished, including regular visits by Jersey football teams, and exchanges of young musicians, including the Musical Originals children's choir, and musicians from Funchal's Escola das Artes. This year a sub-committee of the Geminação has taken on the organisation of the annual Portuguese Food Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
The St Helier - Geminação is evaluating the lessons learned from the running of the successful Portuguese Food Festival at the end of the summer 2012 in order to produce an even better event this year.
The Constable, Procureurs du Bien Public Clive Barton and Peter Pearce, Miss Jr St Helier (Kelly Pontes) and a party from the St Helier-Funchal Geminação twinning group travelled to Funchal on Friday 26th July, in time for the opening of the Rua Saint Helier, a road opened to honour the link between the two towns.
